Where there is significant unrest or instability, serious consideration should be given to evacuation and repatriation, and the relevant authorities and organisations should be contacted at an early stage to ascertain the practicalities of this.

· The Leader must supervise the activity at all times and the staff members must site themselves in positions of maximum usefulness.
· If swimming in the sea is to be permitted, the Leader must first satisfy himself, by local consultation and observation, that conditions are safe.
· If swimming in the sea is permitted, the Leader should instruct Participants not to swim beyond their depth.
· The Leader and staff members must be vigilant and supervise and monitor the swimming at all times.
· The Leader must ensure that the Participants remain together as a group during the activity.
